Digital Skill for Beginners - Toronto Course by Ladies Learning Code

Ladies Learning Code (LLC) is starting a 7 week night-time course, Digital Skills for Beginners, in October in Toronto.  What's different about this is that it is a hands-on course, with experienced mentors present to answer questions.

I hear often the comment from many folks, especially entrepreneurs (men and women) that they are not "computer-savvy".  In my opinion, nobody is born savvy of anything.  Entrepreneurs, you became experts in your business due to time and effort that you spent.  [ Quoting broadcaster Dini Petty, expertise and confidence is gained through the number "times through" you put yourself through - Dini applied this for every experience from her helicopter flying to interviewing. ]

So you may feel lacking in the area of "digital-saviness" but that is because there are only so many hours in the day, and you have spent those hours on your business.

Anyway, LLC's courses are well worth the time.  To date, to keep up with the latest evolution in digital, I have taken 7 of their Saturday courses (HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Wordpress, Photoshop, Drupal, Python, responsive web-design).  I am competent in very few of the above areas as a practitioner, but I attend these so that I can responsibly hire people to do the work, and distinguish BS from greatness.  The mentors are what has made this work (I ask a gazillion questions, sit with them over lunch and ask more questions).  And the mentors also great potential freelancers for hire.

Some courses "speak at you".  That type of course is not useful for learning digital.  Digital is best learned by doing, and that's why the LLC courses, and this series, are well worth the time spent.

I am sure this course will fill up, so if you are considering it, do sign up for Digital Skills for Beginners up early.

Rogers Billing Problem: Where's MyRogers Online Bill?

Update:  See Twitter response from Rogers at bottom of post.

Dear Rogers,
Less complicated bill on MyRogers?  Sure, but I have to be able to find it first!

Actually, looking at the video on MyRogers, it looks like my account hasn't been migrated. Regardless, there's a problem.

My billing date is the 9th.  Today is the 19th.

The latest bill available for viewing in detail in MyRogers on screen or PDF is for May 9th, not June 9th.  The payment amount is for the June 9th bill, the billing details are for the May 9th bill.

How do I get the latest billing details?

User error?  Well, I've clicked everywhere on MyRogers including to payment history and back.  Clicking on "Bill History", there isn't an option for June 9.

Here's an annotated screenshot:

Rogers bill

And if I click into the details under Bill Summary on the left, the dates clearly show this is the May 9th bill...

Rogers billing detail

Definitely not in sync! Please fix!

===
Update:  Rogers (@RogersHelps) responded promptly to my post on Twitter.  Very much appreciated.

Update:  As of July 1, 2015, this has not been fixed, and the latest bill is still not available online. I have asked @RogersHelps again.
Update: As of July 2, 2015, the PDF available via "Download Bill" is the most recent, but onscreen's "Latest bill" is still one month old.

Fixed: Duplicate Calendar Entries on Blackberry from Outlook for Mac

When we switched from standalone Microsoft Office products to Microsoft Office 365 for Business, the online SAAS version, we also switched to Microsoft Exchange.

Having sorted out Sync Services being blank and solved the problem of the contacts not sync'ing on Blackberry, the next problem that surfaced was duplicate calendar entries on the Blackberry.

When sync'ing with a Mac, if you're using Exchange, the Exchange calendar will sync with the Mac's Calendar, but unlike Contacts, the Blackberry Desktop Manager will detect both the Mac Calendar as well as the Exchange calendar.

Therefore, do not select "All calendars".  Instead, choose "Selected Calendars", and leave either the Mac calendar or the Exchange calendar unticked.

How do you clear out the calendar without doing a full reset?  Use the Desktop Manager.  Click on "Clear Data" and clear the calendar only.

Then re-sync the calendar and voila, only one set of calendar entries.

The above worked with a Mac running Lion OS X 10.8.5.

Fixed: Blackberry Not Sync'ing Contacts with Outlook for Mac

Recently, we switched from standalone Microsoft Office products to Microsoft Office 365 for Business, the online SAAS version. At the same time, we switched to Microsoft Exchange. The next time I went to sync my Blackberry, using Blackberry Desktop Manager, the calendar updated, but no contacts and no notes.

Checking SyncServices in Outlook, the fields were empty!  There's no apparent way to add any services.

After much Googling, I finally found this discussion thread.  There are a few clarifications in the thread, which are a bit confusing, so for future reference, here's how to reset Outlook SyncServices, by deleting the "com.microsoft.Outlook.SyncServicesPreferences.plist" file so that contacts will show up on a Blackberry using Desktop Manager.

This worked for Lion OS X 10.8.5.

Step 1:  Open Finder

Step 2:  Click on GO and hold down the Option key to expose hidden folders.  Select "Library".

Step 3:  Browse to the "Preferences" folder and find the "com.microsoft.Outlook.SyncServicesPreferences.plist" file.  Delete it by moving to Trash.

Step 4:  Go back to Outlook and select Sync Services under Tools.  All the available services should now be visible.  Select the services you want to sync.

Step 5:  Sync, then follow your regular Blackberry Desktop Manager sync process.  Your contacts and notes should be visible on your Blackberry.

"Pay Now" Definitely Not Working on myRogers.com

Since August, I have been successfully downloading and paying my Rogers bill online.  As of late last week, this feature is not working, and it is still not working today.

Upon contacting Rogers on the weekend, they asked which browser I was using.  Chrome.  They advised me to use IE.  Well, I'm using a Macbook, so IE is not an option.

They said turn off anti-virus.  Well, there isn't any anti-virus runing on my mac.  In any case, I've been paying my Rogers bill using the Macbook since August.  Other than keep up to date with critical updates, no operating system upgrade.

I then did try to use on a Windows Vista machine with IE.  Paying the bill online using that machine didn't work either

Then tried on a Windows 8.1 machine, on another network, and did not work either.

[ Yes, I am a bit persistent. ]

So Rogers, here are all the screenshots.

When clicking on any of the "Pay Now" buttons, whether the new red button or the old blue text link in the legacy design, the "???????" window pops up as in:

By the way, it's always 6 question marks.

Here are screenshots from the Windows 8.1 machine, on 3 browsers - IE, Firefox and Chrome.  The browsers are all up to date.  Windows 8.1 is up to date.

Here are screenshots from Macbook with OSX Lion 10.8.5.

It would be more convenient not having to go the extra step and log into my online banking account to pay my Rogers bill online, after reviewed my Rogers monthly bill.

That seems to be the way to go for now, or set bill download via ePost.

Rogers, please fix "Pay Now".

Thank you.

Availability of Mobile Data "Daily Usage" Report Has Disappeared from myRogers.com

Dear Rogers,

Please reinstate the Daily Usage online report for mobile data usage on myRogers.com.

According to Rogers online support, the daily usage online on-demand report is still available.

But this is all we get.

If trying to troubleshoot an overage, it would be helpful to know if the overage was spread out over the month or due to a few days of high usage.

With "Share Everything" plans, this type of diagnostic is very helpful.

What did it used to look like?

Sort of like this:

I realize that I can wait until the monthly bill and get it then.  But we used to be able to get this info before.  Please bring it back.
