"Not Your Granny's Ringette Any More" says the Globe and Mail - U19 World Ringette Championships

On the front page of today's Sports section, the Globe and Mail has an article on ringette, titled "Not Your Granny's Ringette Any More" (or see jpg images below).

With the U19 World Ringette Championships coming up later this week and 2013 being the 50th anniversary of ringette, it's great for ringette to get this exposure.

The next 10 days are certainly busy ringette days.  Not mentioned in the article is that the University Challenge Cup is also being held Jan. 2-6 in North Bay.

A lot of folks still think of 'gym ringette' when they hear 'ringette'.  As the article says, "It's every bit as physical as a women's hockey game, if not more". Take a look at this Ringette Canada YouTube Video.

Beth Hurren, quoted in the article, is a totally awesome player and coach.  Affectionately known by the players she's played with and coached as Bubba, she's previously been interviewed by Rogers TV, and honoured by her home association Richmond Hill.

Megan "Gibby" Gibson (#89 above, left) of National Ringette League's  Richmond Hill Lightning (black sweaters), will be playing on Team Canada East at the U19 World Ringette Championships in London, Ontario Dec. 29, 2012 to Jan. 3, 2013.

It's mentioned in this part of the article that Glen Gaudet has two daughters who "both play the sport". They do more than just play! Having both played for the senior Team Canada, they're facing off against each other later this week as U19 national team coaches! Jenn (Gaudet) Wakefield is the head coach of Team Canada West and Jackie Gaudet is an assistant coach for Team Canada East.

Butter Chicken Lasagna - Recipe to Riches

Out of curiosity, we tried the winning Butter Chicken Lasagna from Recipe to Riches.  Quite tasty and definitely worth trying.

Congratulations Rick Matharu @rickmatharu for winning Season 2 of Recipe to Riches and the $250,000 prize.

Butter Chicken Lasagna is a successful fusion of Indian meets Italian.  Only in Toronto!  You can get the Butter Chicken Lasagna recipe from the Food Network.

As you can see from the product pic above, Butter Chicken Lasagna is in the President's Choice line.  If you're looking for it in a Loblaw store, they're typically at the end of one of the open freezers, where store specials are located, along with other Recipe to Riches finalists.  Butter Chicken Lasagna's purple package certainly stands out.

Nutritional value of Butter Chicken Lasagna is available on the President's Choice website.  With 20 g of fat and 0.5 g of trans, you're not going to want to eat this too often.

Perhaps President's Choice will come up with a "Blue Menu" version of Butter Chicken Lasagna.

Groupon Gift Cards - Where to Buy in Canada

Looking for a gift card that's a bit different, I thought of Groupon or Living Social. A bit more interesting than a Visa or Mastercard gift card.

Save on any restaurant, spa or product deals on Groupon or Living Social.  Why not send a Living Social or Groupon electronic gift certificate?  Or Living Social or Groupon gift cards.

For Living Social, they are no longer available. You can redeem a gift card if you have one, but you can't buy new gift cards.

On Groupon.com, you can indeed send a physical Groupon gift card or an electronic Groupon e-Gift Card, but only in USD, so probably not usable on the Canadian Groupon site, Groupon.ca.

Does anyone sell Groupon gift cards in Canada?

Yes, indeed, at Petro-Canada.  I saw $25 and $50 Groupon gift cards on the gift card tower in their convenience store.

The smaller stores may not have Groupon gift cards, so you may want to call ahead to a location before going to the store.

Skyriders Trampoline Got You Interested? Try a Lesson at Airborne Trampoline

Awesome to watch Rosie MacLennan win gold at the London 2012 Olympics Trampoline competition on Saturday!

Lots of folks are probably looking up the Skyriders Trampoline Place in Richmond Hill, where Rosie MacLennan trains.  If you're not ready to join a club but just want to try it out, check out Airborne Trampoline.

They've got three locations in the Toronto area (Mississauga, Newmarket and Woodbridge, just west of Richmond Hill).  We've hosted a few birthday parties there, and it's a great way to tire 6-12 year olds out before they have their sugar fix of birthday cake.  And they do get tired out from their jumping.

It's safe, and fully supervised. Safety rules are drilled into the kids.  And at the end when the kids are tired, if there's still jumping time, the supervisors will put on a show and wow the kids.

Trish MacAllister recently visited Airborne Trampoline Mississauga for a lesson, and wrote about her experience in the Globe and Mail...

Want to be an Olympian? My Summer Games is a column that chases glory at the rec level.
When I was about 6 years old, my parents enrolled me in gymnastics. I didn’t manage much more than a somersault before I decided the sport was not for me. Even then I was acutely aware that I was accident-prone, not to mention lacking in co-ordination and flexibility. So what was I thinking when I decided to try out the Olympic sport of trampoline?....

New Jump Spikes - Asics Cyber Jump London

Last year, our star triple jump/long jump star got a pair of Asics Cyber Jump shoes.
Much better than the middle distance spikes she was previously using, the Cyber Jump spikes were getting a bit tight this year.  So we invested in the Asics Cyber Jump London, a more advanced shoe with a stiffer sole.

Is 'more advanced' worth it or just marketing?  Well, she been getting new PB's and this past weekend, a silver medal at OFSAA Track.
